Dear Pappy

I have a 30 year old 9×12 Wilton rug with an 8” border that was given to me by my grand mother. I would like to reconfigure the rug into an 8’x8’ Octagon to go under my breakfast table. Is that possible?

Please give me your thoughts.

Sincerely

Amy

Dear Amy

I can dis-assemble and re-assemble most anything but seaming a loop pile, like a Wilton, and changing the configuration of a bordered rug is always a challenge.

The trick is to turn a four sided figure into an eight sided one. Because you want to make an 8’x8’ Octagon from a 9’x12’ Rectangle I will need to remove the border, cut the field into an Octagon and re-apply the border. It is likely that I will loose at least a portion of the width of the border material but you will end up with a beautiful bordered 8’x8’ Octagon rug.

One cautionary note; don’t show your new rug to your grandmother. She may want it back.
